Lalbagh Botanical Garden, also known as Lalbagh, is a world-famous garden and one of the main landmarks in Bangalore. Spread across 240 acres, it serves as an important centre for botanical research. Lalbagh has India’s biggest collection of tropical and sub-tropical plants. It also has trees that are hundreds of years old.

It is also a popular public space for leisure and conservation. This garden is 22.0 km away from Prestige Evergreen and is reachable via HAL Old Airport Rd.

The garden was first built by Hyder Ali in 1760 during the rule of the Mysore Sultanate. After that, it came under the care of several British superintendents until India gained Independence.

Lalbagh Botanical Garden Address is Mavalli, Bangalore, Karnataka 560004. Visitors can track the garden on Google Maps using its coordinates:

  • Latitude: 12.9494158
  • Longitude: 77.5821056

Lalbagh is about 7 km from the Majestic city centre and 38 km from Bengaluru Airport. It is well connected by the Bengaluru metro rail. Visitors can also reach it easily by bus, auto, or taxi.

  • Origin: The history of Lalbagh goes back to 1760, when Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore, commissioned the garden. His son, Tipu Sultan, completed the garden by bringing in many exotic trees and plants from different countries, including Persia, Afghanistan, and France. This greatly increased its horticultural richness.
  • British Influence: After the British conquest, the garden came under the supervision of British superintendents. They played a key role in expanding and developing it further. The British also introduced many new plant species and, in 1856, declared it a government botanical garden.
  • Gem of the City: Today, Lalbagh serves as a public park and is managed by the Department of Horticulture of the Karnataka State Government. It is regarded as one of the oldest botanical gardens in India and stands as a living repository of an enormous variety of plant species.
  • Glass House: Built in 1889 from glass and iron, inspired by the Crystal Palace in London. It is the main venue for the famous flower shows.
  • Lalbagh Rock: An ancient rock formation dating back around 3,000 million years, offering wide views of the garden and the city.
  • Floral Clock: Plants and flowers arranged in a circle to show the time, with a working clock mechanism.
  • Lalbagh Lake: Located in the southern part of the garden, ideal for birdwatching, relaxing, and walking along the trails.
  • Rose Garden: A section filled with different types of roses, offering beautiful sights and a pleasant fragrance.

Lalbagh is best known for its flower shows held twice a year. These are big cultural events in Bangalore and bring thousands of visitors from all over India.

  • When: Republic Day (January 26th) and Independence Day (August 15th).
  • Theme: Each show has a theme. The Glass House is decorated with grand floral designs, flower models, and rare plants. For example, the August 2025 show paid tribute to freedom fighters Rani Chennamma and Sangolli Rayanna.
  • Lalbagh is open every day from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
  • The entry fee for adults is usually ₹25 - ₹50 per person (as of late 2025).
  • Morning walkers can enter for free between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM.
  • During the flower shows, visitors need a special ticket, and the price is a little higher.

Lalbagh has shops managed by the Karnataka Horticulture Department along with some private vendors, where visitors can buy fruits, vegetables, juices, and snacks. Public toilets are available near the Glass House. The garden has four entry gates, one in each direction, making it easy to enter and exit. The west gate is close to the Lalbagh Metro Station, while parking facilities are provided at the Double Road entrance.
