Majestic Bus Stand got its name from a popular cinema theatre named “Majestic" which is located nearby. The bus stand was later named in the 1980s as Kempegowda Bus Station in honour of the founder of Bangalore, “Kempe Gowda I”. But till now, Majestic is the commonly used name for the station.
The bus station was started in 1965, and after construction, it was opened in 1969. Earlier Dharmambudhi Tank was there, which was used to collect rainwater and supply water to the city. In the 20th century, the tank dried up, and it became an unused land. Then in 1963, the government handed 1,36,294 sq yards of the tank bed for building a bus stand. The bus stand was built, and it was officially opened in June 1969.
