Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace is in the centre of Old Bangalore and is an important historical monument and a beautiful example of Indo-Islamic design. It is located on Tipu Sultan Palace Road, close to Bengaluru Fort and the busy KR Market. The palace is a two-story structure mainly built with teak wood. Its design stands out with carved wooden pillars, decorative arches, and graceful balconies. The walls and ceilings were once painted with floral patterns and frescoes, and some of these artworks can still be seen today.
The palace is currently managed by the ASI and has a museum on its ground floor. It showcases Tipu Sultan’s life with personal belongings, paintings, a replica of his throne, and more. The major attraction is the famous toy "Tipu's Tiger," making it a popular tourist spot.
Construction: Tipu Sultan’s father, Hyder Ali, started building the palace in 1781 inside Bangalore Fort. It was completed in 1791 during Tipu Sultan’s rule. He called it the "Abode of Happiness" and the "Envy of Heaven" (Rash-e-Jannat).
Post-Tipu Sultan: After Tipu Sultan died in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War in 1799, the British used the palace as their secretariat until 1868.
Present Day: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) now maintains the palace, and it is a well-known tourist spot.
