Varthur Road is a major road connecting the posh residential areas, including Varthur and Whitefield. The road is also known as SH-35 or State Highway 35. It is about 13 Km long and runs in the prime area of East Bangalore. The road starts from HAL Old Airport Road and goes up to Varthur through Marathahalli, Kundalahalli, Thubarahalli, Siddhapura, Ramagondanahalli.

Varthur Kodi is officially called Varthur Main Road. The road is also one of the top tech hubs that is famous for housing the largest Wipro HQ.

Varthur Road is a suburban area of Bangalore that comes under the Bangalore Urban District. Its direction is towards the Southeastern part of the city and connects major areas IT corridors. Its map shows the area's coordinates for people to track its location easily. The coordinates are:

Varthur is a Hobli and is part of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Earlier, the area was a Legislative Assembly in Karnataka, but in 2008, it was divided into three assemblies –

  • Mahadevapura
  • Krishnarajapura

The locale is also one of the BBMP wards. It is located in the Southeastern part of the city, between Old Airport Road and Sarjapur Road. It is very close to ITPB.

Varthur Lake is a beautiful and historic water body in Bangalore, known for its wide stretch and scenic views. It is the 2nd largest lake in the city, covering 180.40 hectares (445.8 acres). The unplanned urbanisation and industrialisation have caused serious pollution in the lake. The lake’s ecosystem is slowly degrading as sewage water from Bangalore enters it through Bellandur Lake.

This is an artificial lake, built by the Ganga kings thousands of years ago for agriculture and domestic use. For the last 50 years, the lake has been receiving 40% of Bangalore’s sewage water. This has caused eutrophication and heavy pollution.

Here are two key steps taken by the government in 2025 to clean Varthur Lake:

  • In January 2025, the government started a biodiversity park project at Varthur Lake, where 10,000 saplings were planned. This was to be planted along the lake’s banks to restore greenery and improve the lake’s environment. The project began with the plantation of 1,500 saplings on the first day. This was done with the help of environmental groups like SayTrees.
  • The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) took steps to stop the flow of untreated sewage waste into Varthur Lake. The BWSSB was directed to ensure that only treated sewage water would reach the lake. This is to help control pollution and improve water quality.

  • Varthur is home to the head office of Wipro Technologies.
  • Major companies like Cisco Systems and ARM also have offices close by. While Whitefield is known for many tech parks, Varthur is now becoming an important IT hub for professionals.
  • The area has excellent road connectivity to Whitefield, Marathahalli, and Sarjapur Road.
  • Major roads like the ORR, Whitefield Main Road, and Varthur Road help people travel smoothly to key parts of Bangalore.
  • BMTC buses offer good public transport options in and around the area.
  • The Namma Metro Purple Line (Kadugodi Station) started operations in 2025 and now provides quick metro access nearby.
  • More metro routes are also planned to improve future travel.
  • The real estate market in Varthur is growing quickly.
  • Apartment prices in 2025 range from ₹4,500 to ₹6,500 per sq ft. Premium villas and top residential projects cost even more.

  • The area also has colleges and higher education centres, which are easy to access from the area.
  • The locale offers many local restaurants and newly opened modern cafes.
  • In 2025, the number of fine-dining restaurants and food outlets is growing as more people are moving into this area.
  • Varthur Lake is the largest green space in the area and offers scenic views.
  • There are also small parks within residential layouts where people can walk, relax, and children can play.
  • A ₹488 crore flyover project from Vinayaka Theatre to Varthur Lake has been proposed to improve traffic flow.
  • The Varthur-Gunjur Main Road (SH-35) is also being widened from 30 meters to 100 meters along a 1.9 km stretch to ease traffic congestion.
  • More new metro routes and flyovers are planned in the coming years to improve connectivity.
  • The area is becoming one of the most promising real estate hubs in East Bangalore by 2025.
