Does Varthur Have A Water Problem?

Yes, Varthur, a suburb in Bangalore, has serious water problems. The groundwater levels are going down. The borewell water is contaminated. Varthur Lake is also polluted because of sewage and industrial waste.

The area, being a top IT hub, has been facing water issues for a very long time since 2010. It has a track record of getting its water level down, along with reducing contamination.

Here is a breakdown of issues year-wise:
  • From 2010 to 2015, Varthur Lake started drying up. The lake also began producing toxic froth and sometimes even caught fire. Groundwater levels started dropping quickly during this time.
  • From 2017 to 2019, groundwater levels had fallen sharply. Earlier, water was found at 300 to 400 feet, and now, borewells have to go deeper than 1,700 to 1,800 feet.
  • Even now, in 2023 and 2025, the area is struggling with lake breaches, sewage inflow, and falling groundwater levels.
Here is a breakdown of the causes of water problems in the area:
  • Groundwater Depletion: Varthur depends mostly on borewells. Overuse by residents and water tanker operators has caused groundwater levels to drop significantly. Borewells that once reached water at a few 100 ft now need to go as deep as 1,500 to 1,700 ft or more. Many borewells have already dried up.
  • Contaminated Groundwater: One of the biggest problems in Varthur is that the groundwater is highly polluted. This is mostly because Varthur Lake is badly polluted. For many years, a large part of Bengaluru's untreated sewage has been flowing into this lake. The dirty water has slowly mixed with the groundwater. Studies show that borewells near the lake now have high levels of salts, calcium, magnesium, and other harmful pollutants. Drinking this water can cause serious health issues.
  • Delayed Lake Rejuvenation: The clean-up work on Varthur Lake and Bellandur Lake has been delayed for a long time. These lakes are very important because they help refill the groundwater. But since the lakes are polluted and not cleaned properly, they are no longer helping recharge the aquifers. This is making the groundwater crisis even worse.
  • Dependence on Tankers: Because borewell water is both scarce and of bad quality, many people in Varthur now depend on private water tankers. This makes daily life more expensive and also puts pressure on groundwater sources in other places.
  • Limited Cauvery Water Supply: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is working to bring Cauvery water to Varthur. But even now, many areas do not have a stable piped water supply. This forces people to keep using borewells and tankers.
Solutions for Water Problems in Varthur (2025) 1.Faster Lake Rejuvenation
  • Speed up the Varthur Lake and Bellandur Lake cleaning projects.
  • Remove sewage, silt, and waste quickly to help recharge groundwater.
  • Build proper sewage treatment plants (STPs) to stop dirty water from flowing into the lake.
2.Rainwater Harvesting
  • Make rainwater harvesting mandatory in all homes, apartments, and commercial buildings.
  • Collect rainwater to reduce borewell use and recharge groundwater naturally.
3.Sewage Management
  • Set up new underground sewage lines to prevent untreated waste from entering lakes and borewells.
  • Ensure all new buildings are connected to sewage treatment systems.
4.Reduce Tanker Water Dependency
  • Provide more Cauvery water connections in Varthur as soon as possible.
  • Build public water supply networks to reach areas that depend on tankers.
5.Strict Groundwater Regulation
  • Monitor and control groundwater extraction by private water suppliers.
  • Ban illegal borewells and limit the depth of new borewells.
6.Wastewater Recycling
  • Promote treated water reuse for gardening, toilet flushing, and construction to save fresh water.
  • Encourage large apartments and offices to set up water recycling plants.
7.Community Participation
  • Run awareness programs to teach people how to save water and protect lakes.
  • Support local groups that help clean lakes and monitor water use.
8.Green Zones & Recharge Parks
  • Develop green zones and recharge parks near the lake and in open spaces to allow water to soak into the ground.
  • Plant more trees to help improve rainwater absorption.
Here are the steps taken by the Govt in 2025 to help reduce water issues in Varthur: 1.Faster Cauvery Water Connections

The government started the Sarala Cauvery scheme. In this, apartments can pay for water connections in small monthly payments. Small homes can get cheaper water connections. A mobile water service called Sanchari Cauvery was started to supply water at low prices. Special Cauvery Connect Centres were opened to give water tankers at fixed rates in water shortage areas.

2.Easy EMI Water Connections

From April 2025, people can pay for Cauvery water connections in 12 easy monthly payments. This helps people get piped water without paying a large amount at once. It reduces the use of borewells and tankers.

3.Bigger Water Supply Projects

The Cauvery Stage V project was finished. It now gives more water to Bengaluru and nearby areas like Varthur. The Cauvery Stage VI project is coming soon. It will give even more water to the city in the future.

4.Free Water Tank in Varthur

A 75,000-litre water tank was set up near Varthur. It gives free drinking water to people every two days.

5.Cauvery Water is Now Compulsory

The government made Cauvery water connections compulsory for all apartments in BBMP areas. This step will stop people from using too much groundwater and reduce the need for private water tankers.

6.Better Water and Sewage System

The government is building new sewage cleaning plants. These plants will stop dirty water from entering lakes and the ground. New pipelines are also being built to bring clean water to more areas.

7.Better Rules and Supervision

Water prices were changed to help the water board (BWSSB) manage better. Now, only senior officers are allowed to lead the water board to make sure the work is done properly.
